CONDITIONAL SENTENCES (IF AND WISH)

Hallo!
Today, im gonna write some grammar study that im sure most of u have known or learnt about this. Yep! Conditional Sentence. It is sentence that talked about supposition, real or not. We usually know the word if as the kind of conditional sentence, but not only that actually, there’s also wish  that can use for this kind of sentence. So, in this post, we will learn about two materies; wish and if.

Now first, let’s learn about wish.

WISH

Betty Azar said that people often make wishes when they want reality to be different, to be exactly the opposite of (contrary to) the true situation. So, to make this kind of sentence, the word wish can express a supposition about present/future and about past. To make it simple, lets look at the table:

WISH
EXPLANATION
EXAMPLE
The True Situation
The Wish Expression
Present/future
In this type, you can express a situation using past verb form. So the pattern is

s+wish/wishes+s+verb 2+o.
1. I don’t know the truth

2. She has to go now

3. I’m not the only one
1. I wish I knew the truth
2. She wishes she didn’t have to go now
3. I wish I were* the only one
Past
When you make wishes about past situation, you have to use past perfect. So the pattern is:

s+wish/wishes+s+past perfect+o.
1. He didn’t help her

2. I didn’t go to campus

3. She bought many
    books
1. He wishes he had helped her
2. I wish I had gone to campus
3. She wishes she hadn’t bought many books

*were is used for all subjects

Nah, if you already understand about this first matery, let’s test your skill by doing this exercise:

THE TRUE SITUATION
MAKING WISH
John didn’t call me last night
 ...............................................................................
Ann wasn’t at the class yesterday
  .............................................................................
You doesn’t understand my problem
  .............................................................................
I spent all of my money yesterday
  .............................................................................
He didn’t finish high school
  .............................................................................

Now let's move on to the second matery.

IF CONDITIONAL SENTENCE

There are three kinds of if conditional sentence; conditional type I, conditional type II, and conditional type III (it will be explain on the table).

In if conditional sentence, there are two clauses; if clause and main clause. Example:

If  I were there, I would help you.
       if clause        main clause

The if clause is usually written first, so you have use comma before main clause, and it will be like the previous example. We also can write the main clause first, and we don’t need to use a comma, example:

I would help you if I were there.
    main clause         if clause

The explanation of the three type of if conditional sentence:

TYPE
EXPLANATION
IF CLAUSE
MAIN CLAUSE
EXAMPLE
I
The if clause still realistic, so the situation is still possible to come, and there is no fact.
Simple present
Will/can+V1
If she has enough money, she can go to London.
II
It is usually used to talk about the situations that are the opposite of the real situations. It’s unreal in the present or future. The fact situation is in present tense form.
Simple past
Would/could+V1
If I were you, I wouldn’t do this.
III
It is likely about the regret of what happened in the past. The fact situation is in past tense.
Past perfect
Would have/could have+V3
If I had had a chance, I would have made you happy.

Except a positive form, there is also a negative form of conditional sentence, right? And instead of write the if+not form, we also can use unless. Example:

Unless I study hard, I will not get the best score.

Now, let’s do the last exercise:

1. Unless I had enough time, I (go, not) ………………………… to the park.
2. If she buys a car, she (drive) ………………………… to Springfield next month.
3. You could have seen my boyfriend if you (come) ………………………… to my party.
4. I can go for a five-mile walk if the weather (be) ………………………… good.
5. If I knew how to swim, I (go) ………………………… to the beach with you.

HOPE IT HELPS! :)
