BUNAKEN NATIONAL MARINE PARK


   Bunaken marine park is a rich and strategic marine park. This national park is located in north Sulawesi and founded in 1990. A total area of this place is 890.65 km². 97% of this marine park is marine habitats, and 3% is land which includes five islands. It is Bunaken, Manado tua, Mantehage, Naen and Siladen. The waters of Bunaken are up to 1.566 m deep in Manado bay, with temperatures ranging between 27-29°c.
   This marine park has a very rich coral reefs ecosystem. There are about 390 coral reefs specieses in this area. Algae species that can be found in this marine park are caulerpa, halimeda, and padina. And seaweed species that can be found are thalassia hemprichii, enhallus acoroides, and thalassaodendron ciliatum. This marine park which one of the most beautiful marine park in the world has other specieses such as fish, reptile, bird, mollusk, and mangrove. In land, this island is rich with areca, sago, woka, and coconut. This park has animal specieses which life in land such as deer and fitch.
    This national park has  20 spots diving with many variants of depth until 1.344 m. 12 spots are located in Bunaken, and it was the most often visited with visitors. There is an underwater great walls or hanging walls in this area. It is wall which has a giant size, vertical, and warped. This wall is food sources for fishes.
   This park that located in north Manado was easily to be attained. From Manado, we have to take a motorboat in 25 minutes. Alternatively, a public boat leaves daily except. Sundays at 2-3 P.m from the canal on the north side of Manado market. The cost is Rp. 25.000 one way for tourists and Rp.10.000 for locals. It returns to Manado from the jetty in Bunaken Village around 8-8.30 A.m every morning except Sundays. We also can charter a private boat to Bunaken in the Manado harbor.
   This park is very cheap, for enter the Bunaken national marine park, we have to pay Rp.50.000 for one day or Rp.150.000 for one year. Children below 10 years are exempt. Except cheap and be attained, this marine park is strategic too, because it has many facility such as hotel, dive instructure, and many restaurant that sold a special Manado foods.
   Bunaken is barely a degree above the equator and thus tropical. The wet season, from November to mid-April, brings frequent rains sometimes in stroms lasting for several days which freshen the air nicely but also reduce marine visibility. The dry season is from May to October, when temperatures climb to a roasting 35° and visibility reaches a maximum.
